This elegant bronze sculpture was created by Burkinabe artist Hamed Nikiema. The reading woman is a symbol of learned and strong women in Africa.
Working with bronze is a traditional craft in Burkina Faso. The term bronze refers to various alloys based on copper, zinc, lead and tin, the proportions of which vary. Today, bronze comes from the recycling of old fittings, such as faucets or Parts from air conditioning systems.
The artist first creates a wax sculpture, which is covered with a sand mixture of clay and dung and dried. The mold is then cooked, the wax melts and escapes through the holes. The molten alloy is poured and takes the place of the wax. After the Once cooled, the mold is broken so that the sculpture can be removed and the final touches can be made. This makes each piece unique.
