"Isabelle", Christophe Sawadogo, 2022

Christophe Sawadogo was born in 1972 in Tikaré, Burkina Faso. With a desire to put himself at the service of others, his first vocation was medicine. However, he turned to the visual arts and studied art and communication at the University of Ouagadougou from 1992 to 1997. After training as an art critic at the University of Dakar in Senegal in 1999, he soon turned away from theory to devote himself entirely to painting. Passionate about poetry and calligraphy, his first works were drawings on paper, made with ink or colored pencils, to create a universe in which characters float, narrated or dreamed.

A lover of calligraphy who sees letters as plastic objects, he composes scenes in which the characters mingle with mysterious fragments of sentences. These characters are often women whose courage and perseverance the artist wishes to honor. He works out every detail, from the loincloth to the hairstyle, creating atmospheres of astonishing serenity in which sunny yellow ink stands alongside deep blues, warm oranges and translucent greens. His work also makes room for paintings whose thick backgrounds recall the earth's crust, on which dreamlike silhouettes stand out. Suspending the gaze between dream and reality, his work is an opening, a window to new horizons.

Christophe Sawadogo has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Burkina Faso, Senegal and Mali, but also in Europe: in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Belgium and Spain.

Today, Christophe SAWADOGO delves into the heart of immediate social concerns with his brushes. In the series "Floods", Christophe Sawadogo observes: "In some parts of the world, women and children travel miles in search of water, while in other skies it is enough to turn on the tap for the precious liquid to flow. Water is a global problem that leads to floods, famines and droughts. Water is a source of life and in many cases can endanger the survival of humanity."
