The Story
The life of the Ju/'Hoansi Bushmen in the 21st century is marked by hunger and cultural uprooting. Life in the vast expanse of the Kalahari has changed for the oldest culture on our planet: hunting, which is vital to their survival, has been forbidden by Namibian law since 1990, and farm fences run through the formerly endless dry savannah. The former nomads are now forced to live in an unusually permanent place of residence and are dependent on charitable gifts from the state or adventurous tourists in order to survive. This is the starting point in which we set out to visit a group of Ju/'Hoansi in northeast Namibia to accompany them on a journey through the world of the "others" in Namibia and Europe. A journey with reversed signs: from being researched to being a researcher, from being a tourist attraction to being a tourist, from being a beggar to being a teacher. It is both a challenge and a completely new opportunity for "them" and for "us". A look at opposites, a mirror that is also held up to us and exposes our "civilized" world and our modern rituals, a role reversal seen through the eyes of another era threatened with extinction. The film "Ghostland" shows, starting from their traditional nomadic life, the inevitable fusion in their homeland and on their travels with the "modern world". We take their position between the worlds and thus achieve a final view of the Ju/'Hoansi, who are threatened with extinction, as well as of ourselves and the world in which we live.
