Liby Lougué was born in 1987 in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), the son of a painter and a seamstress. He began drawing at a young age, drawing comics and portraits that he sold to his classmates.
This passion for drawing gradually developed into figurative painting under the influence and guidance of his father. His first paintings consisted mainly of a fusion of acrylic paint and a collage of local fabrics that he had collected in his mother's studio.
In 2008 he met the Burkinabe painter and designer Hamed Ouattara, with whom he refined his painting techniques. Since 2011 he has taken part in numerous exhibitions in Burkina Faso and around the world.
Liby Lougué is an avowed admirer of Jean-Michel Basquiat's (1960-1988) work, which also inspires him greatly. Like Basquiat, Liby Lougué's works reflect his identity.
Liby Lougué examines everyday life in Burkina Faso with particular attention. His work, in the first series, has a biographical content. The artist uses painting to express his grievances, his feelings and his view of the world and our society. His works reveal the social realities of an African society in transition.
